Fancoil Devices and Usage Types

Fancoil Devices

Fancoil units are heating and cooling devices used in air conditioning systems that operate by circulating indoor air. Similar to other products that circulate indoor air, these units pose a risk of circulating harmful organisms present in the space during operation.

Considering fancoil units and the systems they are used in, we can evaluate them in various ways.

Fancoil Usage Types

  1. 1. Products installed concealed within the suspended ceiling, with a short duct connection to the space.
    2. Self-contained units installed in the ceiling to remain within the space.
    3. Cassette type products installed in the ceiling, with some part remaining within the space and some part in the suspended ceiling, blowing in 4 or 2 directions.
    4. Self-contained units installed at floor level to remain within the space.
    5. Products installed concealed at floor level (underfloor), with a short duct connection to the space.
    6. Self-contained units mounted on the wall above human level, to remain within the space.

Fancoil Fresh Air Connection

  • 1. Primary air + fan coil systems where fresh air is freely introduced into the fan coil unit’s intake.
    2. Primary air + fan coil systems where fresh air is supplied to the space independently of the fan coil unit.
    3. Fan coil systems that do not use fresh air.

In primary air + fan coil systems, the fresh air rate should be controlled, and it should be ensured that the primary air is provided correctly.

In fan coil systems used in conjunction with fresh air systems, it would be appropriate to use fresh air systems for heating and cooling purposes as much as possible without running the fan coils. Ensure that the necessary maintenance and precautions for fresh air systems are taken for this application.

If fresh air is directly supplied to the indoor environment independently of the fan coil unit, it is appropriate to retrofit or add ductwork so that the fresh air passes through the fan coil unit. In this setup, the fan coils can operate at low speed to cool or heat the fresh air using the coils of the fan coil units before delivering it to the space. Despite potential heating/cooling capacity loss and discomfort, this approach can reduce the level of portable particles and maintain low air movement within the space.

In systems without fresh air applications, spaces need to be ventilated frequently. In such cases, fan coils should not be operated without precautions.
